What is Paxil (Paroxetine)

Paroxetine, offered under brand names including Paxil and Seroxat is an orally administered psychotropic medication. It comes from as selective serotonin and reuptake inhibitor class of medications. Uses

Generic Paxil is prescribed for symptoms of depression, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), panic disorder, PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) and social phobia/social anxiety disorder.

How to take

Generic Paxil is administered orally once per day, usually in the morning, during meals or otherwise. It can be taken in a different manner if prescribed by your medical specialist. The dosage is defined depending on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not change the dosage or period of use without prior medical consult, even if the symptoms have subsided.

Side effects

Common side effects of taking Generic Paxil include: nausea, sleepiness, dizziness, troubled sleep, constipation or dry mouth. If any of these persist or become bothersome, contact your doctor.

Contact a medical specialist immediately if you experience any of the following: lack of appetite, mental changes, mood swings, heavy perspiration, tiredness, tremors, decreased sex desire, blurred vision, painful or prolonged erection, urination irregularities, loss of consciousness, uneven heartbeat, muscle pain, difficulty swallowing, swelling, seizures, increased bruising or bleeding, numb or tingling hands or feet.

Precautions

Tell your doctor about your medical history, especially of the following diseases: liver or kidney disease, seizures, heart disorders, mental disorders (e.g. bipolar), thyroid disorders or allergies.

Limit alcohol consumption. Elderly patients should use the medication with caution, as they are more prone to side effects.

Drug interactions

Combining Generic Paxil with certain medications may have fatal results. Do not take MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks before or after taking Generic Paxil and avoid taking thioridazine within 5 weeks before or after taking the medication.

It is not recommended to combine Generic Paxil with weight management medications (sibutramine, phentermine), thioridazine, astemizole or terfenadine. Notify your medical specialist about other medications you are taking, especially: SSRI antidepressants (citalopram, fluoxetine), trazodone, tramadol, nefazodone, "triptan" migraine drugs (sumatriptan, zolmitriptan), venlafaxine, tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, nortriptyline), digoxin, cimetidine, propafenone, flecainide, clozapine, lithium, "blood thinners" (warfarin), tryptophan, herbal/natural products (melatonin, ayahuasca, St John's wort), theophylline, sleeping pills, sedatives, anti- anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (codeine), tranquilizers, anti-seizure drugs (carbamazepine), psychiatric medicines (phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine), certain antihistamines (diphenhydramine) and muscle relaxants, dofetilide, sotalol, quinidine, pimozide, sparfloxacin, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide) and procainamide.

Do not take any medications without prior medical approval.

Missed dose

If you have missed your dose of Generic Paxil, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.

Storage

Generic Paxil should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets.
